A Look into the Muthurajawela Wetlands

  • According to ancient myth, the Muthurajawela Wetlands is believed to be a hiding place for treasure in the days of the ancient kingdoms. In fact, the name literally translates to ‘Swamp of Royal Treasure’.
  • The wetlands were declared a nature reserve in 1996 and has been a major tourist attraction ever since.
  • There are several species of animals that dwell here: 40 species of fish, 14 species of reptiles, 102 species of birds, 22 species of mammals, and 14 species of amphibians.
  • It’s approximately one hour away from Taru Villas - Riva.
