A Look into the Hamilton Canal

Although known as the Dutch Canal, it was built by the British in 1804 to drain out the saltwater from the Muthurajawela Wetlands.
During the colonial days, the canal was used as a major hub for transporting spices and many other commodities for trading purposes.
The canal starts from Puttalam and ends at the Negombo Lagoon, making it a 14.5 km waterway.
